Laser Hair Removal in Maryland

Dr. Christine Helinski in Sykesville, Maryland uses the highest quality Sciton CLEARSCAN laser for laser hair removal. CLEARSCAN contains an infrared laser that can selectively target microstructures such as hair follicles. It is very effective for lighter skin types and, because of the relatively low absorption of this light by melanin, it is the best choice when treating darker skin types. Additionally, the ability to safely treat sun-tanned skin makes this the treatment of choice for active individuals.

Laser Hair Removal Questions & Answers

How does laser hair removal work?

CLEARSCAN utilizes an infrared laser that targets hair follicles specifically. The hair follicles are heated up and destroyed. A computer-guided scanning system ensures that your skin is rapidly and evenly treated.

What skin types can be treated with laser hair removal?

All skin types can be treated with the CLEARSCAN laser - skin type 1, fair skin through skin type VI, dark skin.

Is hair color a factor in laser hair removal?

Yes. Because the laser targets melanin, blonde and white hair will not be eliminated with laser treatments.

Can tanned skin be treated with laser hair removal?

Tanned skin can also be treated. But, for best results, tanning should be discontinued three weeks prior to treatment.

How many laser hair removal treatments will be needed?

This will vary with skin type and which part of the body is being treated. Generally, an area will need to be treated 5 to 8 times at intervals of 6 to 8 weeks. There are three phases of hair growth. Only hair in the active growth or anagen phase is successfully treated each session. Maintenance treatments are generally needed three times per year.

What happens during laser hair removal treatment?

The area to be treated will be scanned with laser light. A system of cooling your skin will be used to remove heat as it leaves the hair follicles. This will ensure comfort during your session.

What happens after laser hair removal treatment?

Some redness and swelling at the treated site may appear for a few hours after treatment. Post-treatment instructions will be provided.

Are there any complications from the laser hair removal procedure?

Temporary pigmentation changes are possible but seldom occur. Some blistering may occur at the site which should be treated with a topical antibiotic.
